Safari Rockhopper Penguin
Rockhopper penguins are the smallest species of crested penguins characterized with red eyes, a thin stripe of upright yellow feathers on either side of the head above each eye, and a crest of black feathers that stands upright on the top of the head. Rockhopper penguins usually make their habitat in rocky shorelines and make nests and burrows in tall grasses called tussocks. They often lay two eggs hoping one will survive. The chicks do not have the yellow and black spiky feathers that differentiate them from other penguins and their beaks are initially black but slowly change as they age. Due to the harsh rocky environment, they cannot slide on their bellies like most penguins, so they hop to get from one place to another. One of the world's most numerous penguin populations, it is estimated that the population declined by some 30 percent over the final 30 years of the 20th century speculating that humans have played a role in the decline.
Rockhopper penguins are about 20 inches in height but our replica is about 2 inches tall with a wing span of a little over 2.5 inches.
