Harp Seal Small
The Harp Seal Pup is a member of the earless seals or true seals who live in the cold norther Atlantic Ocean and the Artic Ocean often migrating long distances. The mother lives in the water most of the time but gives birth on the ice. The mother nurses without eating for about 12 days and then abandons the pup to return to the ocean. The pup fasts for 4 weeks living a sedetary life to conserve energy then starts to shed its white coat before entering the ocean and learning to feed on its own. Talk about mother abandonment!!! Aboout 30% of the Pups do not survive this period.
Our Harp Seal Pup is about 3.5 inches long and appx one inch wide.
