Description
There are several species of Fur Seals, mostly found in the Southern Hemisphere. More closely related to the Sea Lion with ears and large flippers that help them walk on land on all fours they are named by their dense underfur. Smaller than the Sea Lion the pups are born a black-brown color depending on the species. The mother typically forages for 12 days then nurses for 5 days until the pups are about 9 months old. They were almost hunted to extintion for their fur but laws have outlawed that and their numbers have increased.
Our fur seal is about 4.5 inches long and the flippers are appx 3.25 inches wide. The Pup is about 2.5 inches long and his flippers are a little over 2.25 inches wide.
