Description
These 5 sea animals will make a big splash in your collection. They are the Harp Seal Pup-a Fur Seal-a Walrus-a Sea Lion and a Manatee.
The Harbor Seal Pup is a member of the earless seals or true seals who live in the cold norther Atlantic Ocean and the Artic Ocean often migrating long distances. The mother lives in the water most of the time but gives birth on the ice. The mother nurses without eating for 12 days and then abandons the pup to return to the ocean. The pup fasts for 4 weeks living a sedetary life to conserve energy then starts to shed its white coat before entering the ocean and learning to feed on its own. Talk about mother abandonment!!! Aboout 30% of the Pups do not survive this period. Our Harbor Seal Pup is about 3.5 inches long and appx and inch wide.
There are several species of Fur Seals, mostly found in the Southern Hemisphere. More closely related to the Sea Lion with ears and large flippers that help them walk on land on all fours they are named by their dense underfur. Smaller than the Sea Lion the pups are born a black-brown color depending on the species. The mother typically forages for 12 days then nurses for 5 days until the pups are about 9 months old. They were almost hunted to extintion for their fur but laws have outlawed that and their numbers have increased. Our fur seal is about 2.5 inches long and his flippers are a little over 2.25 inches wide.
Walruses are known for their long ivory tusks. They have been hunted for their tusks blubber and meat for many years creating a low population. They are found mostly in the northern oceans. They have sparse fur and wrinkled skin. Their pups are born a dark brown and become lighter as they mature. Born during migration they are able to swim at birth. The mothers nurse them for over a year before weaning and they sometimes stay with their moms for up to 5 years. These are nurturing moms. Our Walrus is about 3.25 inches from tail to tusk and their fins are almost 3 inches wide.
The Sea Lions are found from subartic to tropical waters in the global oceans of the northern and southern hemisphere except for the northern atlantic. Prone to disease attributed to global warming pups are dying faster than they can reproduce causing their numbers to dwindle. Sea Lions are very social and live in colonies. The mothers forage and then come back to nurse their young. Our Sea Lion is about 2.5 inches from tail to snout and the fins are a little over 2.25 inches wide.
Unlike the other sea mammals Manatees feed on aquatic plants. The low energy diet leaves them slow and sluggish often being the victim of fast boats. They do not tolerate cold water and live mostly in the southern hemisphere. They can sleep on the ocean floor or surface and are often used to control aquatic weeds. Calves nurse and accompany their mothers for as long as two years. Our Manatee is about 3.25 inches long and his flippers are a little over 1.75 inches wide.
